Margaret

US 2011 / Drama / Directed by Kenneth Lonergan

Margaret centers on a 17-year-old New York City high-school student who feels certain that she inadvertently played a role in a traffic accident that has claimed a woman's life. In her attempts to set things right she meets with opposition at every step. Torn apart with frustration, she begins emotionally brutalizing her family, her friends, her teachers, and most of all, herself. She has been confronted quite unexpectedly with a basic truth: that her youthful ideals are on a collision course against the realities and compromises of the adult world. Starring Anna Paquin, Matt Damon, Mark Ruffalo, Jean Reno.

"They're calling this the movie that never had a chance.... for all its flaws, a film of rare beauty and shocking gravity.... resonates with loss felt deeply by New Yorkers in the shadow of 9/11.... Seek it out." - Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

Le Havre

Finland, France and Germany 2011 / Comedy-Drama / Directed by Aki Kaurismäki

In this wry and warmhearted portrait of the French harbor city that gives the film its name, legendary Finnish filmmaker Aki Kaurismäki (The Man WIthout A Past , The Match Factory Girl, Leningrad Cowboys Go America ) pays tribute to the Gallic cinema he loves with a film unlike anything else in the Kaurismäki canon, yet which still feels like it couldn’t have been made by anyone else. Fate throws young African refugee Idrissa (Blondin Miguel) into the path of Marcel Marx (André Wilms), a well-read bohemian who works as a shoe-shiner. With innate optimism and the unwavering support of his community, Marcel stands up to officials doggedly pursuing the boy for deportation. A political fairy tale that exists somewhere between the reality of contemporary France and the classic cinema of Jean-Pierre Melville and Marcel Carné, Le Havre is a charming, deadpan delight.

"...uses Kaurismäki's dry wit to tell a tale that's more earnest and political than anything he's done, but which retains the skewed Scandinavian worldview we've come to expect."

- Marc Mohan, Portland Oregionian
